    Festival WiFi Quote Request

“Why do I need WiFi at my event? There’s 4G/5G coverage!”

A great question – and a super common one from event organisers. Yes, you might have signal on paper- but that doesn’t mean the network can actually cope with your crowd.

    Here’s why:

Mobile Masts Have a Maximum Capacity

4G and 5G masts can only handle a limited number of simultaneous connections. Each mast has:

    • A set number of radio channels for voice
    • A fixed amount of bandwidth to split between all connected users

Think of it like a motorway:

More users = more traffic = slower speeds
Too many users = gridlock = dropped calls and failed messages

    5G Isn’t a Magic Fix

While 5G has more capacity and faster speeds, it also relies on smaller cells and higher frequencies that don’t travel as far or penetrate buildings as well.

So in a busy crowd, even 5G can get overwhelmed.

    Voice Calls Use Different Channels

Voice calls (especially on older networks) use dedicated voice circuits, and once those are full, you can’t make or receive calls – even if you’ve got signal bars showing. This is why texts or app messages might still work, but you can’t make a call.

    The Bark & Nurd Advantage

At events, festivals, or large gatherings, we often set up dedicated private WiFi networks (like we do at Bark & Nurd) to take the pressure off public networks. That means:

    • Faster speeds for staff and traders
    • Reliable comms for security and production
    • Happier guests who can actually post their selfies, and spend money

    Full bars = full bandwidth

Your phone might show 4G or 5G, but that mast is doing overtime. With too many users, everyone’s experience suffers. The fix? Add private networks and infrastructure that scale with the crowd – something Bark & Nurd do best at events across the UK.
